Amateur Boxing is the REAL San Francisco Treat!!!
Since the 1850's San Francisco has been a Boxing town. Once miners had pockets full of gold to spend wise promoters brought Boxing to the beautiful City by the Bay.
By the 1880's the Olympic Club had not only promoted Boxing but made a school for it bringing revolutionary teachings to the art of boxing. Those teachings created the worlds first modern professional & amateur world champions under the new marquis of queensbury and gloved rules.
During the illegal days of professional boxing it was the Amateur Boxing scene that held it all together. It's no coincidence that when there's been a strong amateur boxing program in SF, there were also great pro's on the scene.
It's very simple -without amateur boxing there is no professional boxing. For the first time in almost 100 years we have 3 Professional Boxing Champions - Robert Guerrero, Andre Ward, & Nonito Donaire - this in part because of a strong Amateur Boxing program that we had created here in the Bay Area in the early 2000's.
Recently Amateur Boxing began to take another dip due to a combination of things but with the formation of S.F.'s Boxing Union we can happily promise that Amateur Boxing is not only back on the rise but will reach a whole new level in San Francisco history as well as America's. This we promise you!
